Shamatha Meditation I Phakyab Rinpoche

  • Tibet House 22 West 15th Street New York, NY, 10011 United States (map)

In New York, suffering from gangrene and diabetes, Phakyab Rinpoche cured himself through the intensive practice of Healing Meditation. Following the Dalai Lama’s guidance, Rinpoche made the decision to teach and transmit these healing practices.

Rinpoche developed a specific practice of Shamatha (or “calm-abiding meditation”) which he called the 9-Step Healing Shamatha. This complete practice is done in three phases: 1) a phase of purification of the 5 chakras, 2) a phase of concentration to settle the practitioner’s mind, and 3) a phase of practice of both compassion and emptiness called dissolution.

Everyone can start the 9-Step Shamatha practice at the right time in their lives and continue at their own pace. This 3-day in-person retreat at Tibet House will cover Level 1 of the program and is a great opportunity to practice with and learn from accomplished teacher Phakyab Rinpoche, who has accumulated many years of experience with Healing Shamatha and other forms of meditation.

This Shamatha Level 1 retreat is open to practitioners of all levels. Beginners as well as those who have accumulated a number of hours of practice will benefit from these special teachings. In addition to increasing mental focus and calm, Shamatha meditation allows for the mastery of the mind, leading to a beneficial effect on the physical body. It is an accessible meditation practice, whether one identifies as a Buddhist or not. Teachings will be in Tibetan with live English translation.

Note: In the event of proven illness, this practice does not in any way replace medicine or other healing modalities. It is an additional element promoting the healing process.
